| Q |
Can you please give my step by step instructions
for the creation of a web page. I am so far not able to
understand what is on the units web page or the information
sent in the mail. Is there something more specific? |
| A |
Many of you know all about creating
web pages. However, this may be a new endeavor to some
of you. Unfortunately, teaching customers how to build
web pages is a bit beyond the scope of my job, but I'll
be happy to point you in the direction of some helpful
information. I don't know your level of knowledge, so
please excuse me if I am telling you things you already
know.
Most people nowadays use a tool called an HTML editor
to build web pages (unlike the dark ages, when I got
started, and we had to code the danged things by hand
in Notepad). If you have a reasonably new version of
Microsoft Word on your computer, you already have a
primitive HTML editor. You just go to file:new, and
select "web page" as the document type.
However, that is a very limited tool. I would suggest
that, instead, you download one of the trial versions
of the software on a site like HotDog --
http://www.sausage.com/products/index.html
These are reasonably easy to use, and will give you
more of what you need than the editor that comes with
MS Word. And if you like them, they are reasonably-priced.
If you are wanting tutorials, the one I've heard the
best reviews of is the insultingly-titled "HTML
for the Conceptually Challenged" --
http://www.arachnoid.com/lutusp/html_tutor.html
There are more sites for you to try in the "Downloads"
pages on our site --
http://www.osuweb.net/downloads/index.html
Once you create your pages, you will absolutely have
to have a tool to transfer them to the server with.
I highly recommend WS_FTP LE. You'll find it towards
the bottom of --
http://www.ipswitch.com/downloads/index.html
It's free, and it works smoothly.
If you run into specific snags, I may be able to help
you out. But for the best source of peer group help
with building web pages, I would suggest the HTML Writers
Guild. There are e-mail groups that include every level
of user, from people who've never built a web page,
to people who do it for a living -- including some who
do good work! You don't have to join to belong to most
of the mail lists.

| Q |
What telephone number should

| A |
614-247-7100 (or 7-7100 from on-campus)
- Columbus
330-287-7500 - Wooster
740-364-7701 - Newark

| Q |
When I try to connect,
I get a message saying my password is incorrect. What
is wrong? |
| A |
Please try retyping your username and
password, making sure that there are no capitals in
the username. The password is case sensitive. |
| Q |
Why am I getting a busy
signal? |
| A |
Please check the phone number that
you are dialing. It should be 247-7100 or (or 7-7100
from on-campus). Check to make sure that you have not
inadvertently put your own phone number in the "phone
number" field. |
| Q |
Where can I go for technical
support? |
| A |
Visit our support page here
to find helpful information, and to e-mail our support
team. |
| Q |
What are the addresses for
the incoming (POP) and outgoing (SMTP) e-mail servers? |
| A |
The address for our incoming mail server
is:
pop.service.ohio-state.edu.
The address for our outgoing mail server is:
smtp.service.ohio-state.edu. |
| Q |
When dialing, I get a message
that states, "The computer you are dialing is not
answering. Please try again later." What is wrong? |
| A |
Your computer may not be waiting long
enough to begin the connection. Please follow these
instructions:
Windows 95/98/ME
- Click Start > Settings > Control Panels
- Open "Modems"
- Highlight your modem, and click the "Properties"
button.
- Click on the Connections Tab.
- Take the checkmark out of "Disconnect the call
if not connected after [ 30 ] seconds".
- Hit OK
- Hit OK or Close
|
| Q |
I'm getting kicked off-line.
Why? |
| A |
There are at least three possible
reasons for this:
- Call waiting might be causing problems if you get
another call while you are on line. Make sure you
dial *70 before you dial the 247-7100 telephone number.
To set your computer up to take care of this, do the
following:
- If you are running Windows, go into "My Computer,"
and then into "Dial Up Networking."
- Click on the OSUWeb.net icon with the right
mouse button, and click on Properties.
- Click on the "Dialing Properties"
button at the bottom.
- Where it says "This location has call waiting.
To disable it dial [ ]," enter *70.
- Hit okay all the way out.
- If there is another connection to the phone line
your modem is connected to, someone else might be
picking up the phone.
- Line noise caused by a bad phone cord or something
with the wiring of the phone line.
|
| Q |
My computer says it's not getting
a dial tone. What's wrong? |
| A |
If you have voice mail waiting in your
voice mail box, the tones on your phone line that notify
you of a waiting message will prevent your computer
from detecting a dial tone. To remedy this, turn off
the voice mail notification in your voice mail settings.
If you do not have voice mail in your voice mail box,
make sure that the phone jack is working and that the
phone cord is not damaged. |
| Q |
When I try to browse with Netscape,
I keep getting the error message: "Unable to connect to
server." What should I do? |
| A |
Please check the following:
- In the Netscape program, please click on Edit and
go to Preferences
- On the left-hand side, you should see a +
next to Advanced
- Click on that + sign
- Then, click where it says Proxies
- On the right-hand side, make sure that there is
a dot next to the option "Direct Connection to the
Internet"
|
| Q |
Where can I find instructions
on setting up my computer to dial in to OSUWeb.net? |
| A |
| Q |
Where can I find help in creating
web pages? |
| A |
| Q |
Will I always be able to connect at 56K? |
| A |
Under ideal conditions, we can run at
56k. But, the speed at which you connect is dependant
on a number of things:
- The speed of your modem/computer.
- The speed that our system can handle (which is 56k)
- The phone lines in your house or apartment also
determine the speed that your internet connection
can go. If the wiring is older or bad, then the connection
will be slower. If you have questions regarding this,
please contact your telephone company. (Most phone
companies only support to 9600 baud)
- The telephone line between your comptuer and your
telephone jack
- The distance you are from your telephone company's
telephone switch. The farther away, the slower the
speed.

| Q |
What about ISDN connections? |
| A |
An ISDN modem is similar to a regular
dial-in modem with one exception: An ISDN modem can
make two connections to an Internet Provider at once,
combine the data streams into one data source, and providing
a faster connection to the Internet.
An ISDN telephone line is essentially two telephone
lines going through one telephone cord. The two lines
can be used at the same time in order to make multiple
connections with an ISDN modem.
When ISDN users dial in to OSUWeb.net, they connect
twice, and are being charged for the amount of time
of each connection. For instance: If someone connects
on both ISDN lines for 2 hours, then they are logged
in for a total of 4 hours.
UNITS does not provide ISDN lines to those wishing
to use ISDN services. If you wish to use an ISDN connection,
please contact your local phone provider to inquire
about pricing for an ISDN telephone line.
