faqs
A. There are two ways to sign up:
Q. What is the home page of the ISP?
Q. Do I get an e-mail address with my service?
A. Currently, we do not have e-mail addresses for users because we are a part of The Ohio State University, and our services are available only to faculty, staff, and students of The Ohio State University. Since everyone in the university already has an mail address, we have decided to use that system as our primary mail system.
Q. How much does OSUWeb.net cost?
A.We charge $6.95 per month for 100 hours of dial-in service, and 10 cents/hour for each hour of connection over the 100 hours. We also have unlimited plan, which is $12.95 per month, with unlimited internet usage per month.
Q. Why should I sign up for OSUWeb.net when HOMENET service is free?
A. Because OSUWeb.net guarantees a dial-in access with no busy signals; you get connected on the first try. In addition, we provide space for personal web space.
Also, make sure that your phone line is plugged into the modem properly, and that the phone jack is working.
Q. I am on a PC. My computer says that it needs to reboot during the registration process, but when it comes back on, nothing happens. What should I do?
A. Just click on the Internet Explorer icon to continue with registration.

A. Please try retyping your username and password, making sure that there are no capitals in the username. The password is case sensitive.
Q. Why am I getting a busy signal?
A. Please check the phone number that you are dialing. It should be 247-7100 or (or 7-7100 from on-campus). Check to make sure that you have not inadvertently put your own phone number in the "phone number" field.
Q. Where can I go for technical support?
A. Visit our support page here to find helpful information, and to e-mail our support team.
Q. What are the addresses for the incoming (POP) and outgoing (SMTP) e-mail servers?
A. The address for our incoming mail server
is:
pop.service.ohio-state.edu.
The address for our outgoing mail server is:
smtp.service.ohio-state.edu.
Q. I'm getting kicked off-line. Why?
A. There are at least three possible reasons for this:
Q. My computer says it's not getting a dial tone. What's wrong?
A. If you have voice mail waiting in your voice mail box, the tones on your phone line that notify you of a waiting message will prevent your computer from detecting a dial tone. To remedy this, turn off the voice mail notification in your voice mail settings.
If you do not have voice mail in your voice mail box, make sure that the phone jack is working and that the phone cord is not damaged.
Q. When I try to browse with Netscape, I keep getting the error message: "Unable to connect to server." What should I do?
A. Please check the following:
Billing Questions
Q. How do I pay my OSUWeb.net bill?
A. Call 292-UNITS (2-UNITS from on-campus), and a Customer Service Representative will assist you regarding your billing.
Q. My bill says I've used more hours than I actually have used. What should I do?
A. If you believe that someone other than you is using your connection, then you should change your password to something that only you know.
Q. How can I terminate my account?
A. You can go to http://www.osuweb.net to change your account to inactive, or a CSR can terminate it through the web interface. Please bear the following things in mind:
Q. What about ISDN connections?
A. An ISDN modem is similar to a regular dial-in modem with one exception: An ISDN modem can make two connections to an Internet Provider at once, combine the data streams into one data source, and providing a faster connection to the Internet.
An ISDN telephone line is essentially two telephone lines going through one telephone cord. The two lines can be used at the same time in order to make multiple connections with an ISDN modem.
When ISDN users dial in to OSUWeb.net, they connect twice, and are being charged for the amount of time of each connection. For instance: If someone connects on both ISDN lines for 2 hours, then they are logged in for a total of 4 hours.
UNITS does not provide ISDN lines to those wishing to use ISDN services. If you wish to use an ISDN connection, please contact your local phone provider to inquire about pricing for an ISDN telephone line.
